Young puppies have very specific needs, especially when it comes to staying safe and healthy during harsh weather. Because of this, all of our puppies are litter‑box trained while they are in our care.
Puppies under 12 weeks old cannot regulate their body temperature the way adult dogs can. Cold temperatures, snow, ice, and heavy rain can put them at real risk of hypothermia or illness. For that reason, we do not take young puppies outside for potty breaks during inclement weather. Instead, we use a safe, sanitary indoor system that keeps them warm, healthy, and on a predictable routine.
🧼 How Our Litter‑Box Training Works
We use large plastic bins as litter boxes because they give puppies plenty of space to move around. Inside the box, we use paper pellets designed for cats — this is the only type of litter that is safe for puppies. We never use clay, pine, or clumping litters, as these can be dangerous if ingested.
Puppies learn quickly and naturally gravitate to the litter box because:
-
It has a distinct texture
-
It is always kept clean
-
It is placed in a consistent location
-
It gives them a clear “potty spot”
Most of our puppies will even leave their playpen, walk back into their pen, and use the litter box on their own. This system keeps their area clean and dramatically reduces accidents

🐶 Transitioning to Outdoor Potty Training
Once your puppy is old enough and the weather is safe, you can begin transitioning them to outdoor potty training. Because they already understand the concept of using a designated spot, the transition is usually smooth and quick.
